Atlantic Charter Award Authors Award
Over sixty people attended the Annual Tea Party on the grounds of the O’Reilly House Museum on August 12. Held to celebrate the diverse history of the Placentia Area, the afternoon included entertainment, refreshments, period costumes and presentations of awards. Music was supplied by Con Parsons, Walter Parsons and Sadie Ennis.
Heritage Awards were presented to the Atlantic Charter Foundation Inc. of Ship Harbour and to the authors of a folklore book, “Remembers Old Times –The Placentia Folklore Project.”
The Atlantic Charter Foundation Inc. received its award for running a highly successful 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Atlantic Charter last year and for the establishment of a new museum.
The authors of the folklore book awarded included Norah Woodrow, Ann Miller, Eithne O’Keefe and Nellie Woodrow (not present). They researched and wrote the folklore information in 1973, while students, for federally funded Opportunities for Youth program but it was not published. When the Placentia Area Historical Society came across the report they decided to have it published and it came out recently.
A cake was cut to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the establishment of a historical committee in Placentia and Canada’s 150 Birthday was recognized.
